Apr 28, 2012 · Run my wort through my plate chiller while the garden hose is hooked up to it and recirculate the chilled wort back into the boil kettle. Once my chilled wort in the boil kettle is all down to the groundwater temperature (usually 70F - 75F in the dead of summer), I then switch the water feed from my garden hose to pre-chilled ice water.

Alternatively, I've used my garbage cans (my "hillbilly wort chillers") to hold water with the patio blocks inside to provide a base and run water into the barrels slowly and collect the run off.

If you're lucky to live in an area with cool ground water (~50F) then you can quickly chill your wort to 70F in as little as 10 minutes by connecting the chiller to a tap faucet. Areas with higher groundwater temperatures may require the use of an ice water bath and a pump to circulate the water.

Other 1600 insulated poly tank is chilled to 60 degrees constant by my 6-ton portable chiller. This would help me avoid turning my driveway into a skating rink during the winter months as well as save water. Plus, as someone commented, you'll need a pump to move the wort through the IC, which is another complication and something else to clean. For a long time, I did something similar (and maybe what I'd recommend instead): an ice+water "pre-chiller", which I used a 70 1/4hp Lowes sump pump to move through the IC in a closed loop.

I bought this pump towards the end of last season so that I can recirculate ice water through my immersion chiller. It seems that the recirculator arm is more useful. If I had two pumps, I could do both recirculation of wort and utilizing ice water. Jamil's setup has two exit points for the wort though I'm not sure its necessary for a 5 gallon .
After the boil, turn on the water to the chiller. Using a clean pot holder or barbecue mitt, grab the top of the chiller and swirl it through the wort a few times to start the wort circulating. If you are using a cooler type mash tun, recirculating isn't really a viable option unless you are able to heat the wort as it is recirculating. If you're using a kettle type mash tun and having a hard time maintaining temperature, recirculating and applying heat as needed is definitely an option, as is insulating the vessel.

The mash will cool to 152° or so, and then you set your thermostat to 153°. Attach the Recirculation Arm and tubing and turn on the pump (leave it on during the hour long mash). Adjust the recirculation flow with the Recirculation Valve so about an inch of wort sits on top of the grain bed during the hour mash.

Jan 05, 2014 · Ideally, a plate chiller is one pass straight to the fermenter. The pump should be as you described it: between the kettle and the chiller. A valve on the output of the pump is a good idea in case you have to slow the wort flow a little.
Feb 04, 2014 · Can anyone recommend a pump that is powerful enough for recirculating my HLT and later running the wort chiller? I'm sure the recirculating will not require much power, but the 1/2" chiller will give it's 25ft length. I'd like one that doesn't have to be submersed to function.
